When my daughter bought her new Bass Clarinet (she's now a rising high
school senior) she had several to choose from. She actually made two trips.
The first time she tried one Selmer and one Buffet. The second time she
tried three Selmers (one of which was the one from the first trip) and a
different Buffet.
The store (Washington Music Center in Maryland) initially had only the two.
They called when they received some more Selmers (which she and her
instructor preferred the first time) so she would have more to choose from.
It is interesting how much individual instruments can vary.

I'm surprised to hear that you would have such a poor choice in New York.

Interesting choice of instruments she has made! I don't think I've ever
SEEN one of the "contra" horns outside of a catalogue. They certainly
are not in the "major" New York stores. Even non-soprano clarinets are
hard to find. When my girlfriend's kid was looking for a bass clarinet
(NOTE: he bought the Malerne at Roberto's), Manny's in NY said they sell
new Yamahas, but don't keep them in stock. If they order one, it is
automatically a special order for a specific customer, and both they and
the buyer are stuck for it. You have to commit to the horn before you
ever see it. I've heard of arranged marriages but this is absurd:-).

I would love to have the chutzpah, if someone asks me what I play, to
answer that I play the serpent, crumhorn, and chalumeau.
