Your experience may not be unique. Our local community bands describes
itself as for adults and with an audition requirement. However, my daughter
was invited to rehearse with them after she was overheard buying some bass
clarinet reeds at a local music store. The person who approached her asked
if she played the bass clarinet, and my daughter replied "Mostly" but that
she also played Contra-Alto and Contra-Bass whenever she could talk her band
director into using the low instruments. This resulted in the prompt
invitation. When my daughter pointed out that she was only in 8th grade,
the woman said it didn't matter. The band needed a bass clarinet, no matter
how old the person who played it.

Thanks to Anne Bell's list of community orchestras and bands
<snip>
I sent the director an email and she wrote back and said "Come on
over, we rehearse Monday nights, bring your bass clarinet, some guy
showed up a month ago but never came back."

Actually they have no soprano clarinet openings, and no sax places
either. So apparently I made a good "political" choice by mentioning I
really liked playing the BIG screech-stick:-).
