There's a series of CDs on a label called Pablo of Art Tatum doing both
solo and group work. On one of the CDs, called "Group Masterpieces,"
Buddy DeFranco is the clarinetist. Aside from this man sounding like he
was born in a clarinet case, the cover photo is of him sitting in a
chair, holding a clarinet and what looks suspiciously like a cigarette.
If that's what it is, most likely he wasn't endorsing a brand: he
probably just smoked. So did a lot of windplayers back then, I gather.
In fact, I think someone on this list said that Leon Russianoff had to
stop playing because his emphysema became unmanageable.
