good idea for me in any case. I haven't played with an ensemble since
high school and I remember the hardest part of band in high school was
listening to what the other guy was doing while you tried to hear your
own tone and follow the beat at the same time.>>

Ken, a relaxed approach will save your sanity. When I joined the Westerly
(RI) band some years ago, I went to my first rehearsal and sat in a chair in
the third clarinet section. The archivist gave me a zillion pieces of music
to learn for a gig the following week. I really applied myself. The following
week, the principal clarinetist asked me to play second clarinet. Ok, a
zillion more new (to me, anyway) pieces of sheet music to learn for the next
week's gig. I should add that a lot of the music was ethnic (Portuguese and
Italian) and was hand-written in a style that was very difficult to read. For
instance, the flags on the eighth notes and such faced LEFT and the notation
was very ornamented. But once again I really applied myself and learned the
parts. You can guess what happened next. The principal clarinetist asked me
to play first clarinet. Sheesh. I was ready to hit him over the head but,
instead, dutifully took home a zillion more pieces of music to learn.

My advice: PLAY LOUSY ;-)

Cindy
