I suspect many of the purely academic lists may get like that: real
white-glove, cucumber sandwiches, afternoon cream teas, etc. Klarinet, to
follow the food analogy, is more like a big corned beef and chopped liver
sandwich with greasy fries (the best kind!) on the side, served at the
Carnegie Deli, and washed down with a few cans of Dr. Brown's. (Can you
tell I haven't eaten lunch today?)

Then again...who knows what can happen on academic lists? I'm subscribed
to Nota Bene because I own it. It is designed for academic use and may be
the world's most expensive word processor. But people get snippy about how
to read in a bibliography, for Godsake. And I WAS subscribed to a
semi-private Roman Catholic list which I finally had to leave because some
of the people (not the few who were ordained, however) were trying to prove
they are more Catholic than the Pope. They got judgmental, sarcastic, and
entirely uncharitable, thereby forgetting what that famous teacher during
the Rabbinic period said about judging others, chucking rocks, etc.

In the other direction, Words-L is not really about the English language at
all: it's about its members, who fraternize online and at annual clambakes
and other food festivals to which they will travel from across the country
and, sometimes, from across any ocean you can name. Lots of disposable
income there, I guess. It got a little too cute for words, y'might say.
We had Words-L marriages, affairs (all possible combinations of gender,
married or single, and openly discussed), and for all I know (I left years
ago), maybe even a Words-L divorce or two. We even had a cookbook we
constructed to give to a couple who married. If you run a search on my
last name, you will find my chili recipe somewhere out there. The chili is
real good, and will vulcanize your mouth for a three-hour practice session:-).
