I (we) undertook a similar search, with little good results. I do have a
substitute idea that worked fine for us, but will make the purists howl, of
course. <g> Give the bassoon part to a bass clarinetist. (If s/he can't
read the bass clef & transpose, it doesn't take long to write out.) The
timbre isn't the same, but it's not an unpleasant color with the other
instruments, and lets you play a large number of works that otherwise
wouldn't be available.
