Gary,

I'm sorry if my post seemed like bickering. The subject touched a raw nerve.
I was truly hurt and repulsed by the way some of the NU faculty acted
towards those with an interest in certain alternative interpretations of
classical and pre-classical works, views that were supported by musicologic
research. It made the atmosphere stifling and occasionally downright scary -
if you showed any inclination for certain forbidden methods of
interpretation you were literally written off by these people. It was
certainly part of the reason I decided not to pursue music as a profession
(which was probably a very good thing for music), rather, delegating it to a
non-professional personal passion. I would have given my right you know what
to play anything close to Marcellus, and had the utmost respect for him
(among others) as a musician, but as I said before, excellence does not give
anyone a right to act the way some of the faculty did. I have always
wondered, however, if there were others, much more talented than myself,
whose interest in techniques other than those sanctioned by those "on high"
were stifled or ruined by the type of close minded attitude described.
