I know that many people have problems with the restrictions of today's
copyright law. I'm reading a book I just purchased, "English Music
Printing 1553-1700", by Krummel. In it is a chapter called "The Politics
of the Music Patents", recounting the lawsuits of Seres vs. Day (1559 -
Seres won 12 shillings from his former partner, John Day, for printing
psalms that Seres had the patent on), the "printer's complaint of 1577"
(where Seres renewed his patent, partly for nuisance value, and
collected money from many printers), the Tallis and Byrd patents of 1575
(where they had to petition the Crown for help in enforcement),
assignees and the troubles _that_ caused, etc.

Interesting reading. The more things change, the more they stay the same
...
