I attended the concert that Tony gave and still have fond memories of it.
When Chris Hogwood gave a concert/seminar at Northwestern I was also there.
NU has always been in the dark ages when it comes to enlightened performance
practice (unlike DePaul or so I'm told). Some of the wind people were more
open to these ideas (such as Grover Shutze (sorry for the spelling)), but
most, especially the string people, were downright hostile. When I was
there, you tended to keep your early music interests to yourself and a few
other like-minded people. I've just reestablished my connections with the NU
Collegium, now run by Mary Springfels (we just did St. John Passion (no I
didn't find a manuscript where Bach used clarinet, I played 1st flute on a
copy of a 1720 Denner). Things have improved somewhat, but there is still a
large cabal of close-minded faculty. Nevertheless, Mary does put together
some wonderful university sponsored concerts.
