I understand why certain makers continue to play on their older
mouthpieces. The reason I don't make my own mouthpieces out of modern
blanks is that I can't find any blanks that I like as well as the old
ones. Therefore, I play on an old mouthpiece which I refaced, and I
either sell similar old mouthpieces, or I reface whatever others send
me. I guess I could try to get my own blanks custom made, but I don't
have the time to do the kind of volume of business that that would
require. I also agree with Roger that it's a good idea for a refacer to
stick with a mouthpiece that works well for him/her. When I first got
into refacing, I switched too often, which was not good for my playing.
I realize that there are many fine mouthpieces made today, but I
generally prefer the older ones.
