Absolutely, but... the audience expects more out of a performer than just a
pretty sound. Recently, I heard a recital by a clarinetist who sat the
entire time. His technique was excellent but his sound was small (bell
between knees at times) and was boring to watch. I'm not implying all
sitters play this way, but the players I've heard do this tend to posess some
or all of these qualities: sheepishness, unagressive boring playing, small
sound, no pesonality/charisma, take no musical/technical chances, horrible
stage presence, etc.

I think some players are confusing the situation they are in. If I want to
see an orchestra player, I'll go to the symphony! The solo stage is for
SOLOISTS!!!!! If you think a higher degree of playing and showmanship is not
necessary, you're in the wrong arena, wrong gig. Hey, after hearing Brahms,
Weber, Schumann, Rossini, Bassi, etc a million times, I expect some
excitement to come from the performer! In conclusion, I'm sure a player who
sits could play with excitement, but I also enjoy the showmanship,
flamboyance, charisma of a good recitalist!
