It's a good question and one that I wish I could answer. I don't know!
When I place a certain spin on the ball in racquetball, sometimes I don't
know why it does what it does, but I can often repeat the move. I know
that a three wall shot with a specific force will cause the ball to come
off the third wall at a 90 degree angle, but I couldn't even begin to
explain why! LOL

Oh well........at least I know that taking material off does work. I am
assuming that the beak sizes are larger in some instances because others
have designed a specific size to match a certain kind of sound? Not sure.

As far as your last sentence, you are cont entirely correct......although,
in some instances you are. I can narrow the side rails - and this means
there is less surface on the face. But, in some instances, I simply take
material off on the corners of the beak - where the reed never touches.
It also has a dramatic effect.

Go figure.
