In a message dated Fri, 28 May 1999 20:35:20, Bill Maynard writes:

<<Then I heard Tony Pay play and I must say a new world opened up.Not only
was it fine playing but it was on one of the old clarinet systems. Listening
many times I could not believe how he played chromatic passages, etc., not to
mention trills, which I thought were impossible in some places. Simply
wonderful playing ! Although I have never met Tony Pay, I consider him one of
my teachers. Now if you want to really be dazzled listen to his recording of
the 2 Weber concertos and the concertino, also played on a 9-keyed
instrument.>>

For those KLARINET list subscribers in the Southern California area who would
like to hear Tony in person, he will be performing at the Mainly Mozart
Festival in San Diego in June. On Sunday, June 6 he's performing the
Schumann's Phantasiestuck, Op. 73 and Marchenbilder, Op. 113, Mozart's Trio
in E flat Major, K. 498, and Brahms Trio in A minor, Op. 114. On Sunday,
June 13 he's performing the Mozart Clarinet Quintet in A Major, K. 581 with
the Brentano String Quartet. And on Saturday June 19 and Sunday June 20th
he's performing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in A Major k. 622.

For more details, check out the Festival's Website at:

http://mainlymozart.org/festival.htm

In a personal note from Tony which I don't think he would mind me sharing, he
noted that "I am doing K. 498 and K. 622 on my semi-classical clarinet
(boxwood, brass keys, around 1850) bassetised by Ted Planas."

Enjoy!

Don Gross
La Canada, California

p.s. For yet another amazing performance of K. 498 on historical clarinets,
check out Swiss clarinetist Elmar Schmid's recording on Teldec with Andras
Schiff on fortepiano and Erich Hobarth on viola. He performs on a Grenser
reproduction.
