One of the biggest things that helped me improve (besides great teachers) was
listening to recordings of the great clarinetists, ALL THE TIME. In the car,
at home, wherever you can. Don't limit yourself to 1 or 2 performers.
Listen to anything you can, and think about why you like or dislike the
performances. It's a great way to decide what you like in playing, and also
a great way to learn the repertoire. A few of my favorite discs are Harold
Wright's Brahms and Mozart quintets, Sabine Meyer's "A night at the opera",
and Robert Marcellus' Mozart Concerto. Larry Combs has a few discs out on
the Summit label, and David Shifrin has a pretty good collection out now.
They're all great.

John
