Subj: [kl] Old clarinets and intonation

>>>I have a set of Buffet Prestige that is about 10 years old. Recently, I
have
observed that the throat register is difficult to keep in tune. It usually
plays flat.

How does the age of a clarinet affect the intonation of this register?
Is this a common problem encountered on all the makes, or is that more of a
"Buffet issue"?<<<

I used to own a Prestige Bflat and during the 4 years that I played it, the
bore at the top of the upper joint consticted significantly, causing the
throat tones and the upper clarinon tones to go quite flat. It was suggested
to me that this may have been caused by the metal tenon ring at the top of
the upper joint tenon. I had three options: remove the ring and hope the bore
expands, have the upper joing reamed, sell the horn. I chose the third. Found
someone who always played really sharp up there and he loved the horn. It had
been a gem when it was new.

So have the upper bore measured by someone who has precision instruments and
see whether this has happened. On the other hand, if it is just the open g
and above in the thoat tones, these can be adjusted quite easily.
