Subject: Re: [kl] re: covering the holes from moving thumbrest

Here's how I fill thumb rest holes: I have a Buffet R13 bell that's broken
into two pieces. When I need wood powder I use an x-acto knife with the
blade nearly flat on the wood and slough off very fine wood flake with
short, shallow strokes. To make the flakes very very fine, grind bits
between your thumb and your favorite grinding finger (I use my index
finger). When there are only fine flakes and no strings of wood, mix some
with quick-dry epoxy. Add more wood flakes until the mush is med-thick. Fill
the hole, clean up around the edge and let the tenon rest with the filled
holes perpendicular to the floor (and the pull of gravity). After the filler
is dry, rough up the top of the fill a very little bit using the corner of a
fold of 120 grit fine sandpaper. Color with a liquid varnish furniture pen.
Thechnique, as always, takes practise.
