Changing Buffets

My friend, the late Yona Ettlinger, studied with Louis Cahuzac, one of
the great French clarinet players.

He knew him quite well, having spent many months in the Pyernees
Mountains, where Cahusac used to go to in the summer.

One of the things he told me about Cahusac, was that he was given a new
Buffet set every year. Not many, I'm sure, would get that privilege.
The other thing he told me about Cahusac was that he had a whole larder
full of Vandoren reeds. And always preferred to use fresh ones.

When Cahusac died, Yona visited the widow. In order to help her with
some cash until the estate was probated, he bought Cahusac's latest set
of clarinets. He told me they weren't so extra special.
I guess it was the player who made the sound, not the clarinet.

In 1962 I had written to Cahusac and asked him about taking lessons. His
reply was that in the summer he goes to Pyrenees. I could stay at a
reasonable pension there. And I would have to take two lessons a week.
Each lesson was $3.00.
But he died before I got a chance to carry out my plans.
