There is always a trade-off. Generally, more resistance - open up the
tip, less resistance - close the tip. What these things do to the
response (curve schedule) and the tone (depth of chamber) and window size
(reduces it) and tip rail/side rails (thickens it) is quite obvious as
soon as you play it. Kind of like adjusting a great reed - a tiny shaving
will change the response 90% if taken off in the right place. Same for
mouthpieces - one 1/4" pull on sandpaper on the face, or less on the tip
changes the mouthpiece drastically.
