Subj: [kl] My Baby needs a great overhaul
Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 17:53:05 -0400

My beefer (the "normal" Bb R-13 that I bought in high school) needs some
work. It's been about 10 years since the last overhaul, and it deserves
some spiffing up along with some pad replacement. At this point, I figure
I'll bite the bullet and do the full-boat overhaul.

Since I dearly love this horn, I'm going to treat it to some goodies this
summer. The first option is silver plating the keys--some of the nickel
plating has worn, and he's just a wee bit self conscious about it, so I
figure I'll get him a shiny new suit. Of course, plating the keys means the
existing pads have to go. I've always had cork pads in the top joint
because they just work better--but I tried a new Festival with Gore-tex, and
they seemed to be a good solution. I've also has a couple of Valentino pads
on the big bell keys; they have worked very well too.

So--any ideas on a repair tech who does replating, along w/ great pad job?
This horn ahs been very, very good to me, so I don't mind spending the extra
money for fine craftsmanship. Who does the best work?
