Aimee, here's a solution I came up with a couple years ago when a friend's
son was having difficulty supporting the weight of his clarinet on his right
thumb.

Install a marching band lyre upside down on the middle joint of the clarinet.
That's right...install the lyre with the music holder pointing toward the
floor. Now remove the music holder. What remains is the lyre bracket itself
fastened securely around your clarinet. Insert an appropriate size threaded
eye bolt into the lyre receiver. Now you can attach a saxophone neckstrap to
your clarinet.

You should be able to buy the appropriate size eye bolt for about 20-cents at
your local hardware store. Just bring the marching lyre with you. You don't
need to bring the whole clarinet, of course.
