Roger Garrett noted:

<<<While the plastic mouthpiece may play well, it will not play like a hard
rubber mouthpiece. There have been many discussions regarding the
instrument itself - perhaps even the barrel, but there are few people on the
list who would say that the material in the mouthpiece does not make a
difference in both sound and the way it blow (feels to the player).>>>

Well, I think that I may be one of the few--perhaps. I don't think the
material makes much difference in the sound--but it may certainly "feel"
different for the player. If the player thinks there is a difference,
though, it doesn't really matter that a third person can't tell the
difference.

While plastic may be acoustically "as good" as hard rubber is pretty
irrelevant, though. There is no question that the "best" clarinet
mouthpieces are hard rubber, if only because that's the material the
customer makers use for their high-end products. I assume there's lots of
good reasons for it, like the ability to adjust measurements closely and
long-term durability. No quibble from me here.
