Excellent point. In recent years, I've started playing for my students
more. We play a game called "momma bird-baby bird", where I first play
them a scale or other simple passage, and they repeat it, trying to
imitate what they've just heard. This has been extremely successful. Of
course, with some students, even if the "songbird" was Burt Hara or
Harold Wright, they'd still sound like vultures, but it seems to work
for most.
