I have to offer an explanation and an apology. When I sent a message a
few minutes ago about the band director who required certain instruments
in his band, I simply repeated the subject line which this thread has been
carrying. However, I did not mean to imply that the band director about
whom I wrote was "unfeeling." In fact, nothing could be further from the
truth. He was a very caring and nurturing teacher. In many regards, he
was a great teacher, and the results his students achieved cannot be
faulted. He may have been misguided in some respects, such as in his
beliefs about tonal homogeneity. But this does not translate to his being
unfeeling. Sorry not to have made that clear the first time.
