The Jungle

When I would give a master class in clarinet, I would sometimes begin by
asking how many people in the class could imitate the famous Tarzan
yell.

Not a hand would be raised.

I explained to the students that Tarzan would yell like that because he
imitated what he heard in the jungle. Wild animal cries. That's all he
knew...until Jane came along.

Imagine a clarinet, the brand of your choice, with your favorite
mouthpiece and a perfect reed, standing on a peg and waiting in the
forest.
A savage appears and, never having had lessons, he would pick up the
clarinet and try to play it. What do you think the sound would be like?

It would mostly likely sound like something raw and wild - like Tarzan's
yell because that's all the savage would know.

What does this imply?

If you have a conception of sound, your natural instinct is to try to
imitate it - dark tone or not. That is why it is so important to listen
to good clarinetists in live performances or on recordings.
Then listen carefully to yourself as you try to imitate the sound.
