Bill, it's too bad your boss had to make this decision. Maybe you can
convince him (or her) to compete on "value" instead of price. That could mean
selling the Buffets for a reasonable markup but offering free "adjustments"
for 6 months or a year or whatever. In other words, give the customer the
hand-holding that mail order catalogs cannot do. Or sell the clarinets at
cost but bundle the clarinet with a choice of higher-end mouthpieces, case
covers, or whatever. Using Buffet clarinets as "loss leaders" kinda bothers
me, too, but your boss might be shooting himself in the foot by not offering
Buffet clarinets to your customers at all.
