Mark C., I know this is getting rather far afield from the clarinet, but
I'll be off this kick in a few minutes.

This discussion of Henry Fillmore and his alter-egos reminded me that
there was an LP recording in the 1970's of the music of Fillmore, issued
by the University of Illinois Symphonic Band, directed by Harry Begian.

Inside the album cover is a tribute to Fillmore, written by Harold
Bachman, to whom I referred in another message just a few minutes ago.
BTW, I forgot to say in that message that after leaving the University of
Alabama, Bachman went on to head the band program at the University of
Florida.

In these album notes, Bachman mentions some of the pseudonyms of Fillmore:
Harold Bennett, Al Hayes, Harry Hartley, Ray Hall, Will Huff and, yes,
believe it or not, Gus Beans. He says that some of these names were
picked at random from the Cincinnati, Ohio telephone directory. But, I
speculate that I can deduce the origin of one of those names, Harry
Hartley. There was another public school music educator here in
Evansville while Bachman was here, named Harry Hart. He had begun his
career in the 1930's, teaching in Robinson, Illinois, and I was one of his
successors there.

However, it seems that Will Huff was an actual person, who collaborated
with Fillmore on some compositions, at least to the extent of supplying
themes, etc., which Fillmore would orchestrate. After Huff died, his
widow and children received a settlement from the publishers of music
published under his name.

OK, now we return you to the discussions of "blowout," Hans Moennig and
"dark tone"...........
