<<<Until I decide just exactly what I do want on this mouthpiece, I am using
a plastic Luyben that I had lying around the house. It actually works very
well on the new mouthpiece. . . . Of course, others may have different
experiences.>>>

Of course, others may have the same experience.

I went through a religious experience a few months ago in selecting my new
Greg Smith 1* mouthpiece. (I urge all of you to try one, unless you live in
Seattle--you will get my gigs.) As noted in an earlier post, Mr. Smith is
actually evil incarnate; he sends you 3 perfectly perfect mouthpieces and
forces you to choose one (leading to more Prozac use, at least by my poor
wife who had to listen to those endless testing excerpts . . .)

As is quite fair, Greg requires you to buy mouthpieces that you leave
ligature marks on. Dutifully obeying my wife's instructions to purchase
only 1 of the 3, I tested them using a Luyben.

Well . . . I'm still using the Luyben. I have a drawer full of ligatures,
some quite trendy and expensive, but find the six dollar (discount) Luyben
to be better. I get a better tone w/o any sacrifice in articulation. I use
the black one--it gives a darker tone ;-)

I do have a bone to pick. I play a lot of Eb, but cannot get a Luyben
ligature for it. Why?
