An individual's chances of developing tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome cannot be predicted--at least, not in this for=
um. If you feel pain during/after playing your clarinet or typing or whatever you may do repeatedly with your hands, se=
e if you can change your position to eliminate the discomfort. These injuries are repetitive stress injuries, which actu=
ally have far less to do with age than with the way you use your body for any length of time.

I developed tendonitis as a young clarinet player in high school. A physical therapist showed me some exercises and gave=
me a wrist brace. The condition did not improve for about 4 years. A teacher of the Alexander Technique was the one wh=
o showed me how to get rid of the problem--in my case, my posture was the culprit. In 3 weeks, the pain was gone and 7 y=
ears later, there are no signs of it.

Obviously, these problems are totally individual, but I think in most cases, they can be avoided. Finding how to avoid t=
hem is the tricky part.

All the best,
Denise
