And Cindy, many theories that we now know to be false were not only
untested, they were believed by everyone to be true simply on the
basis of observation. Perhaps the most famous is that the earth was
the center of the universe. Everyone believed it. (Those who rejected
it were in serious trouble with the Inquisition, too.) It was truth
by vote.

And today, as we speak, groups of people who belong to the Flat Earth
Society meet and state, purely on the basis of observation, that the
Earth is flat.

That is what Fred wants us to believe. He says clarinets blow out (though
he is only describing his own personal experiences), he knows other players
who say it too, and on this basis draws conclusions.

Who knows. He may be right, but his saying so is not the criteria for
it being right.

He says potahtoes. I say poetaytoes.

He says tomahtoes. I say toemaytoes.

etc.

And what is absolutely fascinating about this discussion every
time we have it is the passions that it raises in people. This
one and "dark sound" are probably the source of more energy
being expended in defense of one's views than almost any other
topic.
