It seems to me that a part of the phenomenon that has not been
discussed at all, are the physical changes to the human body as
one gets older. Consider a person of 25 buying a fine instrument
and maintaining it satisfactorily for 40 or more years. At age
65, if there is an assertion that the instrument has deteriorated,
might that not have to be understood in terms of the physical
condition of the player? Has that person had all his/her teeth
removed? Is there evidence of any lung problem? Would not
stomach cancer or an ulcer of the stomach affect breathing which
in turn give the appearance of the clarinet having diminished
capacity.

So is it the clarinet or the player growing worse?
