up until the last year or so i played my r-13 with the standard barrel,
a b45 mpc and a rovner dark ligature. i used a vandoren (blue box) 3 on
hot humid days and a 2 1/2 on cold dry days.
for the past year or so i've been using the jamey aebersold cds. these
are play-a long cds which feature a piano, bass and drum rhythm section.
the tunes are standards and jazz tunes. i wasn't happy with the way my
sound blended with my recorded rhythm section so i tried various
set-ups.
presently i'm using my r-13 with a moennig barrel, a b40 mpc and the
same rovner ligature. on hot humid days i use a 2 1/2 vandoren and on
cold dry days a 2.
i like the way this sound blends with the cd but i'm having a hard time
with the higher notes. from b below high c on up i'm having trouble
getting a good consistent note (i feel like a beginner again). for what
i'm playing i don't really need to go above the f above high c and
frankly that's about as high as i could ever play comfortably.
so, is there any technique that might help me play the higher notes with
a softer reed? i tried different set-ups but the most important factor
in getting the sound i wanted was a softer reed.
thanks,
ben
