Well --- my Buffet B flat must be around 80 years old, and it certainly
isn't* "blown out". What *has* happened is that the sockets are worn, and
so is the keywork, especially the bearing surfaces at the ends of the
rods.
What are supposed to be the physical signs of "blow-out"?

A student of mine graduated last year had an A Clarinet that he had
purchased from the Curtis Institute. It was dated around 1911, and was a
Buffet. The Clarinet was very, very unfocused (no ping), and quite uneven
playing in all registers. Would the Curtis Institute accept such a terrible
Clarinet as it's own? I doubt it (and they did eventually get rid of it).
That's Blow-out to me. The player playing it was a member of the top
Woodwind Quintet at last years Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition
(in other words, he was quite an advanced player), and had to fight his
Clarinet every step of the way.
