Jim:
Thanks for your message about the Columbia model metal Eb!
The pads appear to be made of leather; similar to saxophone pads. Is this
typical? Also the linkages on the left-hand E/B, F#/C# and F/C keys are
pretty loose and klunky. Since you seem to have experience in overhauling
this type of instrument, do you have a recommendation for replacement pads
(maybe cork), and is it possible to tighten up the keys? Also, neither of
the two mouthpieces it came with is much good. A fellow band member who
plays Eb, alto, bass, and contrabass tried it for me and said (as you
correctly surmised) that some pads were leaking. However, she got a pretty
good sound out of it with her mouthpiece, ligature and reed.
A repair technician I consulted suggested it would make a good lamp! Do you
know any repair techs (yourself perhaps?) who would be willing to work on a
metal Eb and would understand its unique needs?
Thanks again!
Jim B.
