C clarinets: Even if the conductor and orchestra members can't tell the
difference between Bb, C, or A clarinets, as a clarinetist and musician I
find aesthetic pleasure in the differenf timbres and particular feel of the
bore of these various clarinets. When I play my Buffet Albert system C
clarinet the bore has a slightly brighter ring than my Bb, and the focus
feels different also. This interests me, and I enjoy playing with the
difference.

I find the same kind of pleasure and interest when I play my buffet
Albert system D clarinet. These differences are not easily described with
words, but they can be experienced. The D clarinet solos in "Till" and "The
Rite of Spring" feel different to the player when played on a D clarinet
instead of on an Eb clarinet. I like to have these aesthetic pleasures.

Bass clarinet in A: My first orchestral experience was with the (then)
Miami Philharmonic in the late 70's. James Conlin was conductor, and I was
called the night before to play bass clarinet on "La Valse". But I couldn't
play a note because the part on my stand was for bass clarinet in A. Conlin
wanted to fire me but there wasn't anyone else in the area who could play
the part either. I stayed up late into the night and transposed the part,
which I could cover on my Selmer S33 bass (to low C). Later I found out
that most bass clarinet specialists have made or borrowed and copied a
transposed part.

My closing words of advice to anyone who, like me, waited on the outer rim
of an orchestra contractors' call list are: Be prepared. No mater what.
