Another opinion. Many years ago before the availability of recordings of
the world's fine clarinetists, I think that there were distinctive schools
of clarinet playing i.e. french, english, german, etc. with their individual
tone colors. Since the advent of fine recordings that are available world
wide this distinction has become very slurred. Now we have individual
sounds that each player has developed for himself/herself and it has become
very difficult to tell the national origin of players just by listening to
them. A top flight professional player must be considered to have an
acceptably good sound since they are a professional and people like what
they hear in these players. All of us have individual opinions on who we
like and why, but these are still individual. When we hold up certain
players for students to listen to I hope that we can give them a good cross
section from around the world.
