Subj: [kl] blowout

The doublereed list had a lengthy debate on this subject a couple of months
ago. The oboists there are almost universally convinced that this
phenomenon exists, although the evidence or lack of same is similar to that
in the same thread here. If the phenomenom exists we should be able to
assemble some answers in the following form.

1. Symptoms of blowout

2. Measurable characteristics of blown-out instrument as compared to non
blown-out instrument

If "blow out" is not an entirely subjective judgement made by
instrumentalists, then completely nonmusical tonedeaf individuals of some
technical sort should be able to unerringly identify blown out instruments
with objective tests. If such evidence exists then lets have it!! Until
then it is like Uri Geller, results obtainable only when scientific
observers are absent...or in short "bogus".
