I used to play on that type of setup for jazz, a very open mouthpiece with a softer reed. People felt that I sounded like a Mack truck. I originally got the mouthpiece so I could be heard when playing with the sax section. It also made going from bari sax to clarinet much easier.
Then, I found out that two of my favorite jazz clarinetists use a very different approach. Eddie Daniels and Don Byron both use fairly closed mouthpieces with very hard reeds. My repairman actually measured the dimensions of Eddie Daniel's mouthpiece and found it comparable to my classical mouthpiece. Now, I just use the same mouthpiece for both classical and jazz, but with different reeds and I'm much happier with this setup.
