During my repair apprenticeship with W. Hans Moennig, I watched him
set up and tune over two hundred R-13, A and Bb clarinets to the standards
of Robert Marcellus. According to Mr. Moennig the A clarinet after his
professional Set up should play just as even and have resonance equal to that
of the Bb Clarinet. Since most players have not had the opportunity try an
authentic Moennig Clarinet, They just accept the inconsistent pitch and
timbre flaws of a new A as the norm.

I have a student playing on an authentic Moennig Bb Clarinet. It has a 67
barrel (original). Either the Clarinet is quite blown out, or it never was
good in the first place. I prefer to believe that it is blown out, as I
refuse to think that it could have been originally constructed to play that
badly. The bore must have changed over time. It is very, very stuffy,
unfocused and uneven blowing - feels like blowing into an elephants trunk.
I asked a blow out question a few weeks ago. It was unanswered. The
conflict I figure is that the sellers of used instruments do not want to
acknowledge blow out, as there would be the possibility that the older
instruments have it (that's really bad for sales). On the other hand, new
manufacturers would believe in it, as over time, a new instrument would be
needed (that's really good for sales).
