As a young lad, not having an A clarinet, I used to play some of the
Mozart last movement on my Bb along with Reginald Kell's 78 rpm record
on our family radiogram. It had an adjustable speed, and I just set it
so that it would be in tune.

Not really appreciating what I'd done, I had quite an argument with my
teacher about whether the piece was for Bb or A clarinet. "Well,
Reginald Kell plays it on the Bb," I said. "I know, because I can play
along with the record!"

(It must have been a bit fast, of course:-)
