I'd have to agree with Jay on that. The Brits seem to have a very different tone that most Americans can't seem to get used to. There are a few I'm able to tolerate: Jack Brymer, Andrew Marriner, and whoever the current 1st chair for the Philharmonia O is. I guess it's just taste. On the other hand, I find that British clarinet players are very passionate and inspiring. My teacher put it best when he said that he listens to them who despite their tone, are excellent clarinetists nonetheless.
