Send this to him for me.

What is the responsibility of the drum major to the band director, the
members of the marching band, and the band as a whole? The field commander
carries out any orders the band director gives to him, he relates those orders
to the band and if the band doesn't respond, makes them. Half the fun of being
field commander is torturing the members (just kidding) :) The field commander
is someone that has to know what is going on at all times so the members can
count on him knowing what to do, He has to be a leader willing to confront
members that disobey (that's a hard part), show no favorites, and willing to
stick up for the band. When i was field commander i had to take over class and
pep band when the director wasn't there, I helped with the bed checks on
overnight excursions, promoted the band, screamed orders, and helped the newbies
survive initiation day.

What's the best quality for the Drum Major to have? Leadership and strength.
You have to have strength to convince the members to follow you, not to mention
that your arms get mighty tired after 10 solid hours of waving them about and
clapping. Leadership is obvious, you have to be able to make quick decisions
and stand behind them, be able to discipline without flinching, you have to make
the band want you to lead them (I sound like my old band director!!)

Most of all you have to have nerves of steel, i know i keep bringing up
disciplining members, maybe my band was just rowdy, but you have to be prepared
and not get nervous the first time someone tells you to shove it when you call
them to Attention. They'll try your patience and nerves the first time you're
commanding, so they can see what they can get away with. I endid being called
Mother Hitler after my first week, and i was afraid i was being too soft on
them. nerves of steel also serve well when you have a MAJOR mess up on the
field and they all look to you to see what happens next. (a good "SCRAMBLE!!"
can help clear that up).
oh, and a REALLY REALLY loud voice.

hope this helps.

Band (sounds more prestiges then it really is :) )
