Leila:

Thank you for your very comprehensive answer to my inquiry. The misspelling
was a memory lapse rather than a typo. I went back to my notes, and it's
indeed "F. Barbier" embossed above a Selmer logo. The serial number is
31626, so it probably was manufactured at a later date than yours. It's
five-piece wood clarinet with what appear to be nickel-plated silver keys.
The case is covered with tweed material on the outside, has a red velvet
lining, and is shaped like a trapezoid rather than a rectangle when viewed
end-on.

The instrument is owned by a friend who hasn't played for years. When she
told me about her reconditioned instrument in casual conversation, I asked if
I could try it out for her. It has a nice feel and had obviously been worked
on by a craftsman (or craftswoman). It speaks well in all registers and has
a pleasant, somewhat dark tone. I'm interested in the history because I've
never seen a Barbier before, and in the value in case she ever wants to sell.

Since you also mentioned metal clarinets, I own a one-piece E-flat soprano H.
Bettony Columbia Model, serial number PA4.1, 705.634, which I acquired from a
band director who was moving out of the country. It's not the greatest
instrument, but an interesting collector's item. The case is covered with
black cloth on the outside and lined with purple velvet.

Your information is very useful. Thanks again for your help!

Jim
