I just heard a recording on the local classical station of Crusell's Clarinet
Quartet #2, with the solo part played by Thea King. I really enjoyed this
delicate piece of music, and the technique seemed flawless, but what struck me
most of all about this recording was her tone.

Her tone was absolutely even across the entire range of the clarinet. Her
throat tones were just as clear and pure as the notes above and below. I
rarely hear that kind of consistancy in recorded clarinet playing. It is
usually quite easy to discern which register is being used simply because of
the change in the color of the notes; that was not the case here. In fact, at
first I suspected she might be using an alto clarinet because I could hear no
break crossings!

THAT'S what I want from my playing. I have not heard much of King's work
(although I will remedy that!); is this her normal style?
