Definitely. Being able to transpose this kind of stuff is vital. I can
handle bass clar in A when it's written in treble clef, and I can handle
bass clef stuff so long as it's Bb. But give me a bass clar part in bass
clef for A bass, and I'm really in strife. But on the C clarinet thing,
we're doing the Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique at our next concert, and
there's no way that there's even one C clarinet in Christchurch, let alone
four. In fact, I'd be surprised if there were many more than three or four
in the entire country. But having to do the bass transposition that I've
done has made it much easier for me to transpose than for the other three
players (except that horrendous passage in the 2nd clar part about 60 bars
before the end of the last movement - had to write that one out!). Horn
players (and to a lesser extent, trumpet players) do it without thinking -
should be that way for us clarinettists as well.
