Hmm, I still haven't had a chance to play one, so I can't answer your
excellent questions, but thanks to the good information from other people on
the list, I'm getting interested. Just think of the advantages of A flat
clarinet:

1. No more bulky cases to lug around! Toss out that obsolete slide rule,
slip A flat clarinet into the nice flat slide rule case and clip it to your
belt.
2. A flat clarinet doubles as a handy fly swatter
3. ...or a bookmark
4. ...or a paint-stirring stick
5. ...or a spatula for frosting cakes
5. ...or an emergency splint, if you break your arm carrying the contrabass.
5. Practicing on A flat clarinet will never bother the neighbors. In fact,
you won't make a sound!
