Either that's a misprint, it's not full-time, or it's a symphony orchestra for the i
independently wealthy only.

20 hours a week at MacDonalds pays better.

I'd also encourage any performance major (as I'm encouraging my son) to look for
opportunities beyond their national borders. Some developing (or developed) countries
offer reasonable pay to be in their orchestras since they're a source of national
pride. Not something for the weak of heart, but there are more possibilities. An
American friend of mine played tuba in a symphony orchestra in South America for
some time. (Chile? Peru? Brazil? I don't remember. She was Lisa Yulkowski then.) She
found a lot more opportunities there - and a better standard of living for the money -
than in the US.
