Subj: [kl] Unusual use of Basset
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 04:03:49 -0400

Unusual use of a Basset clarinet.

This last Sunday I went to hear a concert, in which one of my pupils
participated. He used a Basset for the following works:
2 Brahms songs for soprano and viola and some songs by Frank Bridge for
the same scoring.

The Brahms sounded really good with a Basset clarinet. My pupils said it
only went down to low Eb.
The Bridge piece, I didn't ask and he didn't tell me.

It suited the songs very well. I, myself, think that the Basset
extension give the clarinet range an extra dimension to the sound. I'm
not going to say "dark". It was a little different..
