You don't have to PURCHASE the instrument you need, although I would think
that a professional clarinetist would, like the professional carpenter, want
to own all of the tools of the trade. After all, they are an investment in
your future.

For occasional use, though, you could try to borrow or rent the clarinet you
needed for a particular job. My oboist friend cannot afford an English horn
so she borrows one from the local university orchestra when she needs the
instrument.

I guess that in music, as in other areas of life, "networking" is the name of
the game.
