Unless you are REALLY talented, it's probably not a good idea. If you switch
of Music Education to Performance, you would not be able to take any school
teaching positions--but you still would be able to teach privately. There's
a lot of competition for clarinet performance majors, and relatively few
openings. With the Ed. degree, you can still perform, but if your
performance career does not work out, you can still teach.

Have you also looked into the possibility into switiching to a Music Therapy
program, if your university has one?
