I joined the list again after having dropped out for a while. I just wanted
to introduce myself. My name is Sebastien Duguet and I just finished studying
at Indiana University in Bloomington. Before coming to study with James
Campbell, I studied in Europe with Guy Deplus for 4 years and Alfred Prinz
for 1 year.

What I wanted to say about timbre and transposition is that we have to learn
how to transpose easily and that it can only be reached by practicing
transposition on a regular basis, if not daily. That's the only way to
achieve confidence. We don't always have time to switch clarinets, so good
transposition skills are absolutely necessary. Take any etude or orchestral
excerpt. For example: the 1st movement of Brahms 3 is easier if everything is
played on B-flat clarinet, so practice it that way.
Some E-flat clarinet parts are written in D-flat, i.e. Strauss "Till
Eulenspiegel", so transposition is necessary there too.
